Morphorm's Software Accelerates the Engineering Process for Complex Designs
Albuquerque, NM – September 2025 – Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia) has released its FY2024 Partnerships Annual Report, which showcases the laboratory’s impact in transferring advanced technologies into the hands of U.S. industry. Among the highlighted collaborations is Morphorm, recognized for accelerating the adoption of advanced simulation technologies that enable automated, simulation-driven engineering design.
From National Security to Industry Impact
Additive manufacturing has transformed what is possible in engineering design, allowing the creation of advanced geometries and materials. However, design software has struggled to keep pace with these new manufacturing capabilities. To bridge this gap, Sandia developed Plato, an open-source software platform that streamlines engineering workflows by simulating and optimizing component geometry across multiple physical domains before any physical prototypes are built.
Morphorm’s founder and CEO, Miguel Aguilo, played a central role in developing Plato during his tenure as a computer scientist at Sandia. Dr. Aguilo contributed to the Department of Defense’s DARPA TRADES program, which advanced the fundamental mathematics and computational tools required to design highly complex engineering systems. Through these experiences, Dr. Aguilo recognized the commercial demand for Plato technologies across industries ranging from defense to semiconductors.
"We are honored to partner with Sandia National Laboratories," said Dr. Aguilo, Founder and CEO of Morphorm. "The partnership with Sandia lets us collaborate with world-class experts, accelerating the growth of our company while helping us bring the fruits of the Labs’ R&D investment to the commercial world."
Bridging the Gap Between Labs and Industry
While Plato is freely available as open source, its complexity creates a steep learning curve for users. Morphorm was founded in 2022 to bridge this gap, delivering commercial-grade software that makes Plato’s powerful optimization and simulation tools accessible to industry. Under a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with Sandia, Morphorm is creating a platform that integrates Plato into user-friendly, automated workflows. By leveraging GPU acceleration and high-performance computing, the software enables ultrafast multiphysics simulations at scale, dramatically reducing time-to-market and development costs.
Driving Innovation in Clean Energy
Morphorm is initially targeting defense and clean energy applications. These technologies demand continuous improvement in performance, reliability, and efficiency. For instance, the U.S. Department of Energy has set a goal of extending the lifespan of solar panels from 30 to 50 years, requiring novel approaches to reduce material degradation and optimize critical design parameters such as cell architecture and metallization layouts. Morphorm’s software will give manufacturers a powerful tool to optimize these parameters through simulation-driven design workflows, accelerating design cycles and improving product durability.
Transforming Digital Engineering
Since its founding, Morphorm® has been at the forefront of digital engineering innovation, combining advanced scientific computing with structure- and physics-preserving machine learning to deliver real-time, simulation-driven design workflows that enable clients to achieve breakthrough innovations with unmatched speed and efficiency.
This collaboration with Sandia represents a pivotal milestone for Morphorm, one that reinforces its leadership in engineering simulation and expands the commercial potential of open-source national lab technologies.
